Kavinsky - Nightcall

They couldn't have found a better match for such a song - I adore the combination of these visuals and audio. Such a perfect pair. Eighties science fiction + eighties inspired electro house. What's there not to love?

I particularly fancy how the song alternates between minor key and major key, lingering just long enough on the minor scale to evoke that beautiful sense of 80s nostalgia.

I heard of Kavinsky a few years back, not very well known here in the States it seems, but has been gaining more of a following gradually. I came very close to buying tickets to the show in Montreal (?) a few years ago because I was so in love with the nostalgic, deliberate synths so carefully paired with staggered beats, and fantasized about the idea of hearing the music so amped up and clearly loud, played by the artist himself, to the point of reverberating along with my heartbeat, along my arms and skull, vibrating until my eardrums go numb (but not damaged, God forbid).

Somehow, though, some part of me is glad I never went to the show. Sometimes listening to a song by oneself keeps a quiet beauty that is just so valuable, like the hidden light of a flower that has not yet fully bloomed.... as Pablo Neruda may say. Anyway, enjoy this, and hopefully look past the gore of the first few scenes.

Wolf Gang - The King And All Of His Men

The genre for this should be Victorian Alt Punk, if such a thing exists. The beat and lyrics are so fresh and catchy. I love the deep synths layered over the echoing voices. Stylish cinematography in the video, too. I love music that has a small story weaved into it, not fully unfolded, so that there's always that bit of mysterious pull. Love, love, love.

Beirut - Santa Fe

One of those songs that takes you to a fresh clean place away from this congested city. The synth and layers are bliss. The beginning seems morbid, but just watch until the end. Twisted perhaps, yes... but I think the greater message implies that loss of others does not always mean loss of yourself. You are alive... humor in being alive! *Live*  The last scene shows that the man still has himself... He still has his sense of humor, he can still live on, and still keep the warmest, best memories of his beloved lady and dog.

On another note.. the lead singer, Zachary Francis Condon, originally began "Beirut" as his solo musical project, but then expanded into a band. He was brought up in Newport News, just 1.5 hours east of my hometown, then moved to New Mexico. I heard Santa Fe is a beautiful place... now, it has a beautiful song attached to its psychological spot in my mind. Sweet.

Darius - Maliblue

I recently heard this song and it blew my mind in a subtle and quiet way. Tranquil and chill, yet so cleanly structured. The musician's name is Terence N'guyen it seems, making French House in Bordeaux. Couldn't really find much more info on him, but have a feeling that he might become more popular if he keeps this up. If hippies ever formed an army, this would be their marching song. Warm, fuzzy 60s borderline 70s with a distinctive edge.
